Basically I have just left college to go to work as we need the money, my partner is in a low paid job so a wage was more useful to us than a bursary and didn't want to end up with a student loan.

We have 6 year old son and I have accepted a jobin a nursery which starts next but I haven't signed a contact yet.

E are normally careful when it comes to contraception but I guess it only takes once and so now my period is just over a week late which is unusual. Haven't had a chance to test yet but would it show up anyway?

If I am pregnant I can't afford to give up work but I don't know if I'd be able to continue in my new job if I tools them, can anyone advise me on what might happen?

Thanks

Why wouldn't you be able to do the job if you are pregnant?

mamadivazback · 10/07/2012 19:13

Hi I could do the job happily but is more from the employers POV as I haven't signed my contract yet and it is a he nursery so I am one if the original team of 8 nursery workers.

Can they let me go if they find out I'm pregnant?

Oh and I did two tests an hour ago and both are positive :-)

Congratulations. If an employer did that it would be discriminatory. If I were you I wouldn't tell them until you are good and ready to announce your pregnancy.

I believe you're not advised to tell people that you're pregnant until you're at least three months gone, and it's not unusual for people to not realise that they are pregnant until they are several months gone anyway.

Solution: sign the contract, and "discover" that you're pregnant when you're three months gone or so. If they dismiss you, then it's discrimination and you would be able to take them to a tribunal.

You have to tell your employer 15 weeks before you due date, that's the law. They can't not employ you because your pregnant but if you tell them now they will prob find another reason not to. Obviously you may feel like you are misleading them but I had 2 interviews and told them I was 9 weeks but was only looking for temp summer work (also a student) but never for either job. Unfortunately had a miscarriage and had an interview last Monday and got a job.... !
Look up online about legalities but inmpretty sure it's 15 weeks from the Sunday before your due date.

No you don't Hayley.

If you want to qualify for SMP and SML then you have to inform them 15 weeks before your EDD.

But there is no law in the land which forced you to tell your employer you're pregnant.

Haylebop12 · 16/07/2012 10:56

That's what I said wasn't it? :-/ 15 weeks before you due date.

hairytale · 16/07/2012 15:28

I didn't mean it to sound blunt. It's just that there is no legal obligation to tell your employer ever! You could actually just hand in your notice as usual without ever telling your employer.

Haylebop12 · 16/07/2012 16:22

Ooh I see! Sorry :-/ miss information from me then! I thought it was a legal obligation but not till
Then! I'll
Try that one next time haha!
Thanks :-)

Yahoo have just appointed a new CEO who's 6 months pregnant!

I thought it was a legal obligation to tell your employer. I was in this situation recently but actually lost the baby before got a chance to tell the employer. Now looking back I know exactly what would have happened - they would have hired me and then at the end of the probation come up with some bullsh*t excuse why I cannot continue with them. As it happens, I resigned anyway after three months as this company was utterly miserable place to work.
