Hiya mums

I am in a dilemma about my job, I was on maternity leave for a year and recently went back.
Previous to this my role was a senior accounts manager in branch. I had worked towards the end of my performance plan for my role and had rights ie cheque signing, underwriting authority etc.
Since going back all other colleagues are now the higher in role and wage and im being classed as the junior and am spending more time helping others reach their targets thahn do my own bcos ive got none at moment. I need to be on a course b4 i can write loans now bcos company has joined fsa but 4 weeks gone by and still making tea....I feel like they are trying to push me out by humiliating me what do u think ,,,,

i would get advice from the maternity alliance as they have effectively demoted you which is a form of discrimination

starsq · 01/03/2006 22:47

are you in a union?

try the ACAS website for info on your rights

starsq,

i dont really have any constructive advice but what you say makes my blood boil. this is a sore subject for me! you really do need to contact acas. fwiw i was made redundant from my job of 8 years while i was on mat leave and they gave the bloody office junior (who i had trained) my job. dont let them get away with it..sure this would be classed at being demoted? you really need to find out where you stand. im not 100% but i dont think they can do this.

Suggest that you talk to your supervisor - explain your concerns and how you feel that your previus experience is being under utilised - and ask to develop a firm plan together to get you back to a level of responsibility that you are happy with (e.g specific dates for courses that you need now).

Taking a year off can be really tough when you go back, especially in what can be competitive career roles, it's hard to accept that people have maybe leapfroged you when you have been off, but the balance is they have been gaining work experience, whilst you have been gaining the experience of being a mum. Pls don't take this the wrong way, but accept that the others have moved on to as they have been in the office, and now show them what you can do by creating a plan to show what you can do and get back to speed sooner rather than later. When I returned from DS1 I had a 2 week period of covering a lady I was replacing and know how frustrating the spare wheel feeling can be, but use the time to your advantage and push for the specifics that you now seem to need to get back to where you were. If they won;t train you then that's a different matter, but ask for the plan giving specific dates and at elast you'll see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Hope it helps - keep your chin up!
