new job - dependency leave - use of emergency nanny service

Am about to hand in my notice at current part time job for a new job full time. Not signed anything yet but its a really good opportunity. DD is 3 yrs old. How does dependency leave work as haven't really looked into it. I thought it was unpaid leave for a day or two max but can someone clarify?

Am imagining a scenario where if DD falls ill for whatever reason, I can take a day or 2 max to stay with her unpaid, but if the illness is longer than that it would cause huge difficulties at this new job. My DH can help a bit too but his job is quite stressful and time off can be difficult to take.

Should I think about finding an emergency nanny service and has anyone ever used this sort of thing before? If yes, how did you find one and how expensive is it? Did it work well? We have consulted family (in-laws) to see if they could come to help should anything like that happen but they're extremely reluctant to drive across town to help out even in an emergency. Would rather not ask them if the reluctance is there tbh. My mum lives a 4 hour drive away and is in her late 70's (she had me v late in life!) so can't really ask that sort of thing from her as she's not in great health. Should I stay in current boring job and give up a v good opportunity and salary or go for it and cross that sick child bridge when it comes to it? I just wanted to be prepared for every eventuality before committing to the job and wanted to see if anyone else has been in a similar situation.

Would the in laws be willing to look after her if you drove her over to them? Dependants leave is officially to give you time to sort out someone to mind your child but most workplaces will allow you a day or 2 off to mind your sick child. Otherwise unless it's long term illness, you take a couple of days off then DH take a couple? Or save up some holidays and take those to cover sickness. Smile
