From benefits to work - what should I expect?

I'm currently a lone parent on Income Support with Housing Benefit etc. Have two under 5s.

If I were to get a permanent job for example admin or supermarket 9-5, for two days per week, what can I expect to happen with regard to my benefits? Would they suddenly stop and have to be reconsidered, leaving me with no income to pay rent etc for a month? Am I likely to be better off?

And what if there was no permanent job to be had and I turned to temping? How would that work? Would that be a lot of bother wrt the various benefits?

Childcare would be free courtesy of a family member but never for more than two days per week.

Grateful for any advice!

Hiya,

I thought someone with more up-to-date knowledge may have helped already, but seeing as they've not I'd suggest getting in touch with the C.A.B and they should be able to give you an appointment with a benefits specialist.

From experience Temping was a lot of messing around for me as everything I earned was deducted from my benefit (except for £5) although this was a while ago, but I found if I only worked the odd day I was actually worse off.

Best bet is CAB as at least they'll be able to go through your working tax credits etc if you were to find a full-time job.

Sorry I can't help more but they're forever moving the goal posts so best to get qualified advice.

Good luck though, hope it works out well for you.
Mark.
