Shall I apply for this job?

I started my current job nearly a year ago. I like it, I like the people and I am doing well but I don't have a passion for the subject. I work in the not for profit sector. I have a 2 year contract, so a year to run, but I think that it is more likely than not that it will become permanent. It has been an excellent career move. I have manager status but am not part of the management team although I would like to be. I work 16 hours a week and would like to increase it but there is not currently an option to do so.

I have just seen another job advertised which sounds interesting. It would be part of the management team, it is 20 hours a week and I would bring home more than £500 a month net more than I do now for 4 hours extra per week. Looking at the job spec, I fit all the criteria. However, it is a 1 year fixed term contract. It doesn't say that it is a maternity cover and I don't know how the role is funded. If it is a maternity cover I wouldn't apply but I think that they would have to specify if it was.

I guess my reservation is whether, in this Market it is worth applying for a role on a fixed term contract when I have a job I like which may well be made permanent, although I don't think I would necessarily want to stay much longer but taking on a fixed term contract would mean potentially job hunting again in 6 months time.

Apply. You have nothing to lose. If you get an interview and it goes well, you can ask about opportunities for the contract to be extended. If, on balance, it doesn't seem much of a prospect, there's no reason you'd have to take the job, and you may feel happier where you are, if you've explored and rejected other options.
