Redundancy pay and a fixed term contract??

Would anyone here know if I am entitled to redundancy pay. The facts are as follows: I am on one year fixed term contract that has been renewed once and I have been informed that it will not be renewed for the second time as the company has no money/ they no longer need me.

Thanks in advance!

You are not being made redundant , your fixed term is coming to an end and not being renewed, that is all.

I'm not an expert though so maybe others will disagree.

I think this Directgov info might be helpful for you, Pauliina. I thought that on a fixed term contract you could simply be terminated at the end of the contract but it looks as if it depends on your length of service. Would this renewal put you past the 2 year mark?

I've received statutory redundancy once and an improved one once, both for fixed term contracts. They had both been renewed at least once but were over 4 years total. I think at one time I was told 4 years was important but that may well be out of date now.

The formal letter I received stated I was finishing due to redundancy.

I would guess your employer have given you an end date that falls just short of two years' service, because yes, redundancy pay depends on length of service.

You are entitled to redundancy pay at the end of a fixed term contract but only if you have 2 years continuous service. You need to check your start and end date. However, you'd only receive the lowest end of redundancy payment if you are entitled as payment amount is linked to length of service.

Thanks for the contribution!

My contract started on 28 July 2010 and will end on 27 Jul 2012, so on my last date I have been there for two years, thereby making me entitled to redundancy pay. My employer (a well-known corporation) has refused as they have not given this payment to pervious employees in the past.

Pauliina, looks like you miss out on a redundancy payment by one day. I would suspect this was purposeful by your employer... hence why they've never had to pay in the past. Not a lot you can do about it, nor I would think of much financial benefit for the strain of fighting.
