Hi Everyone

I wondered if any one could give me some advice. I have recently told my boss I am pregnant and now he has said that my targets i had previously agreed to to earn my commission will need to change. He discussed them with me and they are harder to hit than my original targets. Can he do this? It is only my targets that are changing, no one elses!

Wont be much help and really only trying to bump this up for you.

Are the targets agreed in a contract? If they are I'm not sure if they can even change them.

Do you think they're trying to make you fail so they have a reason to let you go? Bit strange they are only changing yours.

When are your targets set and are they in writing? if so they will need to negotiate a change given that it could have a negative impact on your remuneration?

Also ask for the reason for the change to be put in writing.

Unless your colleagues are doing a different job or you you normally receive new targets at this time of year, it sounds from the brief info you given to be a bit dodgy.

Do you have a bonus linked to your targets? If so he is maybe realised he will have to pay you more on mat leave as it is worked out on average earnings over a set period!

My targets were agreed a few months ago and my bonus is linked to my targets. If I had not told him I was pregnant then I know I would still be on the original targets. Do you think it is discrimination?

Without knowing all of the details and in particular your employment contract, it could be. Ask for a written explanation and if that does not satisfy you, contact HR for an explanation - company's tend to be very wary of doing anything that could be perceived as discriminatory towards pregnant women but you do get an odd few who will try.

Just keep pushing for an answer and I can't emphasise this enough, in writing (email is ok).

Do you have colleagues in an equivalent position? Were their targets increased as well?

I agree with Shenanigans about getting them to explain in writing.
