URGENT - How to position subcontractors in proposals?

Hello

Have the opp for a last minute big proposal.

May need to draft in help. Currently I have outlined x days at my day rate. But I am thinking I might need to use others, for eg a VA I know. So I am guessing I need to include them with a day rate too? Only then charging the client the hourly rate of who is doing task y etc or am I being too nice/not commercially minded enough!?!?

My rambling thoughts are:

  • Not that keen on contrasting my rate next to a cheaper VA!
  • I might not actually subcontract depending on how the work pans out.
  • There is an element of buying "me" for my experience/skills, so there is part of me that is nervous about including others but for various reasons I might need the support (inc when my DS starts school and he'll be doing 2 hours a day until half time, which leaves a 3 hour gap before the after school club - yes that is right 2 hours!!! Am completely panicking!!) *Different rates could look complicated/encourage them to look into the detail. *On the positive including different rates may seem more fair/equitable.

Just wondered if any of you produce proposals with subcontractors in there, how do you deal with them?

Thanks in advance as always
WS

Personally, I'd just give the rate for yourself. There should be no need to give hourly rates of a person you have technically "employed" to work for you.

Good luck with the proposal.

Agree with UKSky - if you're responsible for overall quality control and delivery of the contract, don't mention them. The only time I'd mention subcontracting in a proposal is if wanted skills/expertise that couldn't be done in house which means I'd need to buy in expertise. I would also expect to have had that conversation with them before submitting a formal proposal.

Ah yes, that first half term thing - I remember it well! Can you find a CM/friend/student to look after him between school and half term? It's a total pita I know

DowagersHump · 21/06/2012 13:09

school and after school club, not half term!

watersign76 · 21/06/2012 15:00

Thanks both.

Decided to stick to my rate as inclusive of any help. Have been up front on the help though, as one person (a wonderful marketing freelancer who I met through MN) will be with me on the day of an event, so needed to be clear.

Dowager thanks for the childcare sympathy, it is a 'mare!! We are sadly lacking in CMs around here, but yes I will be seeking somebody (did think our motherly cleaner might be up for it) to do that shift! My parents are helping out a bit, but not going to ask them to do full time care for nearly 2 months. DH can take hols, but it just won't make a dent.

I/the helper will be charged with taking him to the after school club, as I don't want him joining them after everybody else has been their for nearly 2 months. Nor do I want him getting used to the idea of coming home after school every day.

Ironically freelancing was meant to be more flexible, but I just cannot contemplate turning work down/not working for 2 months. I have worked really hard recently at developing opps etc. Hoping once I am a bit more established I'll be able to benefit from the flexiblity bit..!!! AHHHHH

Thanks again. MNtters as usual being really helpful/a good sounding board - thanks.

I recently submitted a tender where they asked specifically for the daily rate of any sub-contractor to be employed by me. Check the bid requirements?

watersign76 · 22/06/2012 13:48

They have chosen me!!!!!!!

Thanks again. V delighted.
