I applied for a new job within the same organisation I work in NHS but in a completely different department and building. I got the job and all the relevant checks have been going through, CRB, Occ health etc. I have decided i'd much rather stay in the job i am in at the moment but what can I do????? They have invested time and resources in getting my checks done and I'm not sure I will be able to just 'change my mind' and I feel bad about all the time wasting. I have not actually handed my notice in for my original post yet and was advised to wait until everything had gone through. What can I do???

If you haven't handed in your notice, you don't have to move. I would let the recruiting manager know asap, as they will need to start looking again, and let the HR department know too, so that they know they can stop chasing your checks.

Does your current manager know you were leaving? Do they want you to stay, or is there a possibility of them making it uncomfortable for you? Just things to consider before you officially withdraw.

i'm sure they would like me to stay. The department I am in is short staffed and I have always worked very well there. The thing is this new job is a higher grade and better terms than my present post. My current post is more convenient and with having young children I have decided the latter is more important to me at this point in my life. To others it won't seem to make sense why I want to stay in my current role. I just feel a bit embarassed by the whole thing and feel very bad for the new department who are very lovely!

Were you sure about the new role when you applied for it?

jollymollie · 17/06/2012 10:02

I applied for it because things in my current department were not great. There was conflict in the office which didn't involve me directly but which made for a pretty bad atmosphere. This has since been resolved. The new job is a good one and a higher grade . There is more flexibility in my present job and with two young children and no family support I have decided that at this stage in my life that is more important. my current role is also very low demand which I also like, the new one would not be so. I just feel bad about the whole thing!

Are you sure it's not just nerves at the idea of starting a new job? Long term would it be better?,

jollymollie · 17/06/2012 10:16

It may well be better long term but there would be opportunities in my current department in the future too. I am not sure if I want to stay in my 'comfort zone' and that is part of it.

This new job has aspects that are completely new to me and much more demanding. My job at the moment is really perfect. I can take dcs to school, come in after and if I need to go early then that is not a problem. With my situation as it is at the moment I think that side of things is more important than slightly more money and a more interesting job. This new job won't be one where I can just 'down tools' when it's time to go.

Have you investigated whether there could be flexibility in the new role, may be worth checking before you turn it down, they obviously liked you so may compromise to keep you and avoid the hassle of recruiting someone else.
Good luck!
