Can it work if you're both shiftworkers doing lots of overtime?

I've got an interview for a full time shift job (in the emergency services), it's one I've done before so I know how much overtime is involved.
DH is a full time emergency services worker so has days cancelled/overtime quite often.

Childcare for outside 9-5 looks crazy expensive, we don't know many people we could rely on every week for childcare, but have people we could palm DS off on in an emergency. Grin

Is it possible to make it work?
We live in a suburb London, DH earns around £2k a month take home (has around £400 left over after bills etc), I'd be on £1.4k per month take home (but would have to get a zone 1-5 London travel card).
DS is 5months...by the time I get the job (if I do) he'd be around 8months.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience? Or words of advice?

Is it worth doing or will our family life suffer far, far too much (I originally gave up my job as DH & I only had one day off together a month)?

TIA

Have you thought about getting an au pair, or in your location a female student who could lodge free in exchange for picking up the slack(bits where you are both working),

we have had in the past had a couple of students (live out) who would split it between them,

we have also had a live in for free person, who basically was the third adult , so covered the gaps, or was there when we were both working nights.

It's worth keeping a career going if you can.
