please help !!! i have been let down on child care for friday coming and my employer has said its unacceptable and i need to sort it sooner rather than later.... this is the 2nd time since i went back to work (my baby is just one) that i have had to take time off for child care ...... also when i returned i was made part time in a different position which i again wasnt happy about but could do nothing about....... can they do this and does anyone know where i can find my rights and get concrete advice, im at my wits end with them now !!!!!

I too was about to try and post a helpful post, but unfortuneatly I also agree with Sarkywench and I do not wish to get nasty PM's.
I am sorry OP, but I really feel you are totally unrealistic about your rights here. And as sarky said I am not at all surprised that your employers are not happy. Twice in 9 months is just not on.
I have never taken a day off because of childcare arrangements, at short notice, in 7 years. And I have to jiggle, juggle and plan ahead. As most of us do. When did you find out that your mum cold not have your dd? I think you are going to have to accept that this situation, i.e. your mum being your main childcarer, is just not reliable enough.

Agree with Sherlocked. Frankly with the attitude you've displayed here to other posters who are just trying to be realistic I'm not surprised your employers aren't pandering to you.

Take annual leave or find a stand by option. Your employer only has to allow unpaid leave for emergency childcare and this isn't an emergency.

You were entitled to your exact same role back when you returned after 16 weeks. I'd approach your employer for your post back if I were you.

Unpaid leave is exactly what directgov would suggest if irc. What is it exactly that you want in this situation?

Why has your childcare fallen through? Your friend must have know it was her child's birthday Confused

There is no compromise with my employer and they are not approachable for me to be able to make up hours. I have made the decision to resign as the situation has become unbearable in the office and my manager won't speak with me at all I just get yelled at and told im not good enough. Not ideal but best for me and my family. I do thank everyone for their help and advice.

Liz, that sounds a bit extreme - is this a private sector company? Have a look into nurseries and have a chat with ACAS
