Before I went on maternity leave I was an Operations Coordinator within one department of my company, the role was created for me. When I gave them my return to work date they asked me to come in and suggested I return as a PA as a vacancy in the dept had come up. Then they sent me a job add to apply for, which I did, end of the day I was trying to be flexible. I had the interview, then decided that I didn't want the job and emailed my existing boss asking her to 'call me to discuss my existing role' as I wanted to withdraw my application. Then the interviewer called me saying that they wern't going to offer me the PA role as although I was the best candidate they couldn't afford to lose me from my current role. I thanked her and explained that it had probably worked out for the best and told her of my change of heart. My boss called that afternoon and I explained that I realised I didn't want to watch someone else do my job and that I actually love my job. She was pleased and said that she didn't want to lose me and that I was one of her strongest members of staff (nice to hear). She said my role had changed a lot and that she was going to make some additions to my job description, she also asked how I would potentially feel about a new job title. I said this was fine so long as I was still doing the same role. She said I would be but that she also wanted to add in some other bits. A much more senrior and experienced person has handed his notice in and she wanted me to do one of the things he used to do.
Yesterday she sent me my job description. Same boss. New job title. New job description!! I say new job description, there are two things on there that I used to do. The covering email said that my maternity cover had been offered a new role as Operations Coorindator. Here is the tricky bit...it's still the same department that I was working for but it's a different remit of that department. I called HR this morning as the HR Coordinator is a friend of mine, the sort of friend I often go to lunch with etc and so I discussed with her off the record. She is saying that my cover has not been offered my job, her job is a new role and my job is my existing role. I asked her how it could be when title, responsibilities and department were all different. She agreed with me that it was strange but said that she hasn't seen the JD yet as it isn't final. She suggested I email my boss with my points of concern and go from there.
I am returning to work at 9 months, I know I am not entitled to my same job if the needs of the business change, which HR said they have. However I thought I was entitled to a job most compatible with my existing role, so wouldn't that be the job of my cover? However HR said that that would be the case if my existing job had been made redundant and it hasn't, they say my new job description is for my existing role....which to me it isn't. I am trying to find my existing JD so that I can compare but really I would appreciate some input.
My points of concern:
- I clearly stated that I didn't want to see someone else doing my job (but then I don't know what my covers job description will entail, I think they will say that my job has changed so much that it doesn't exist, in which case shouldn't they make it redundant? However would they then say what they are offering me now is a suitable alternative, rather than what my cover is doing?)
- I don't want to work for this new department, I loved my old own and had established excellent relationships. This new department has a terrible repuation and everyone is job hunting.
- I am being given some of the responsibilities of someone who was very senior and paid more significantly than myself. How is it right that I do his work but for a lot less. I also stated on the phone that I didn't want to get too involved in his area and I would need extensive training as I don't have as much expertise as him. I need to find out if they would offer this training.
There are other things too but there are the main ones.
Any thoughts?
