ideas and options for remuneration

Any ideas are welcome! What are the options for remuneration when self employed other than the obvious? I don't currently run a company and am aware the overheads are significant.

I'm thinking... Do the work, charge a small amount and have all the overheads of running a company and dealing with hmrc.

Or, ask for a share in the business I'm working with.

What else?

Thanks.

Overheads of running a company are NOT significant.
£14 Annual return fee.
HMRC payroll software is free
Accountant would cover their fee in reduced tax

OR be self employed sole trader

Share of the business you are in : you are at the mercy of others IMHO

I am self employed and have almost zero overhead. I pay for a mobile that's just for the company and that's pretty much it, now that my computer has been paid for and put on taxes for last year. I work from home and so rent etc is already paid anyway.

And dealing with HMRC isn't really that hard. My self assessment took minutes (I made very little money, to be fair) and I traded accountancy help for website help. Grin

Thanks. I thought that dealing with bureaucracy would be more hassle.

I'd be helping a startup and I wouldn't want to charge much. They'd use me for a few hours a month. Spending more than an hour a month on running a company e.g. accounts etc... It felt like I'd be as well doing the work voluntarily or looking at other options.

I think I spend about four hours a year on the boring tax etc stuff, altogether. Self assessment, last time took about 15 minutes... working family tax credit did take a bit longer. Fartfannying about at the end of the month to get the paperwork up to date is a PITA but you have to suck it up, and it actually only takes me about 20 minutes.

...just feels like hours!

Tee2072 · 18/05/2012 07:56

Or days, fuss. Grin

I agree registering as self employed is one form, and maybe one for NI - and a tax return -then about 1/2 hour a month to keep records. I wouldn't set up a company - thats a bit more overhead/fuss
