Combining Self Employment with Part Time Work

Do any of your freelancers/self employed mums combine this with paid part time work for a company? I get really scared of lack of income during very quiet times (like the last 2 weeks have been) and my other half has suggested I get a very part time job (about 12 hours or something) either in my field or just a totally random job in a local shop etc. Does anyone else do this and has it worked? Does it take some of the pressure off or do you find it interferes with your self employed work?

I work 2/3 days a week (spread randomly across the month for one company
and otherwise do a HUGE range of free range work
some weeks nil
this week 55 hours

if you are a part time employee make sure they are paying you to get the job done, not to sit there for certain hours

when i started freelance i worked 2days/week in a paye job for four months but really it was no different in content or style to what i do from home self employed for other clients. but this one wanted me in the office.. it was quite nice, i'd do it again if asked to... only problem is you can't really take calls from other clients, though i managed ok with checking email on my iphone during lunch breaks and occassionally during toilet breaks Blush

Yes, it works, why shouldn't it? TalkingPeace2 - love the 'free range work' - makes it sound nicer somehow :)

I was a solicitor for 4 days a week - with two school age children - (spread across 5 days) and worked freelance (writing). JUst fitted it in when I needed to, evenings - and when DH was around.

Now I have 4 children and am solely freelance .....

DH and I have both been free range in our respective fields for 14 years.
Now we both operate through limited companies
It's exciting
but well worth it.

I bumped into my old boss the other day.
He offered me a job.
I said thanks but I'll never work full time for anybody again.
I LIKE having that freedom (and insecurity!)
