Midwifery and motherhood?! Can it be done?

Hi there,
I have been thinking about training to be a midwife but not sure how it will fit with family life... I have a DD (3 yo) who will start nursery in September and a DS who is 1 yo. Training is 3 years full-time... any mamas out there who have done this and still seen their kids?! And how is midwifery as a career? My DH is a teacher so he will be around in school holidays which is a bonus but what about during school times? I would really like to be able to drop off kids and pick them up most of the time... or is that trying to have my cake and eat it?
Any opinions gratefully received! :)

I think it probably depends what type of midwifery you want to do. My friend works on a ward two nights per week and even though she is there during the days she finds it difficult with family life. When her kids are in school she plans to retrain as a health visitor or be a community midwife, which have more 9-5 hours. That's only one person though. There must be plenty of midwives who do it and have kids! But retraining for anything while your kids are young will be hard. I know it's hard waiting if you've found something you think you'll love, but are you sure you don't want to leave it til they are a bit older? That sounds really offputting and I really don't mean to be. If I were you I'd find out about open days and go along and speak to some course tutors and other students and see what they think. Good luck!
