Where is a good place to advertise for staff?

I am a Virtual Assistant who has been going for 1 year now. I am ready to take on my first member of staff, but it would be a very very part time job which would grow in the future. I am not sure where the best place to advertise for staff would be? I have thought about trying the jobcentreplus website, but the position I want to advertise is for an administrator/secretary to work as my assistant from there own home and to start with it may only be for 1 hour a week! The hope is the hours would build up as the business continues to grow, it would suit someone who wants school hours but who doesn't want much work to begin with. Where on earth do I look for someone who this would appeal to?

Hard to say, really, but you might want to try Gumtree for a local position, or if you really don't mind where they're based, you could try PeoplePerHour.com.

As I haven't ever employed anyone before, I can only really give you ideas where I would look for positions, and those two came to mind : )

Best of luck!

Are you a school mum ? Does your school have a newsletter that you could advertise in ( we have a weekly one that takes adverts from locals ) then at least you would be near that person .

No I'm not a school mum yet, my little girl is only 2. I had thought about people per hour so may go down that route. I have placed an advert with the jobcentreplus this afternoon so will see if anything comes of that. I need the person to be based in the UK but other than that is does not matter where they live. I am just looking for someone to help me with admin on an ad-hoc basis, but I am not sure if only working 1 hour or so a week (and other weeks nothing at all) to begin with would be appealing. Oh well I guess I will soon see if I get any replies from the jobcentreplus. If not I think I will go down the people per hour route. I think once the business grows it could be a nice term time only school hour job, but at the moment I can only afford an hour or so a week which is a shame! Thanks for your replies!!

Surely there is someone here who could do it? PM me with details and I'll see if I can fit it in.

Unless they've changed massively, I would avoid JSP like the plague, the one time I used them to help find a House Model/Receptionist, for a ladies fashion company I then worked for - it was an absolute joke - they completely ignored the ad criteria & sent any number of totally unsuitable applicants, many of which had no interest in any job at all, but were forced to the interview

When I complained, they started picking holes in the ad criteria, saying I couldn't advertise for a female - when I jokingly commented that if they could find me a perfect size 12 bloke who could politely answer a phone & didn't mind spending half his day prancing around in front of customers in a frock, then go ahead - they then got REALLY picky & started shout sex discrimination & threatening legal action Confused - thankfully they saw sense in the end, but it left a sour taste & put me off for goodHmm

Do you not have a local newspaper, or does your schools not have a notice board, as the short hours could well appeal to a Mum

When I was running my business I advertised for a similar sounding post (was only 2 days a month) in our local paper - which automatically puts them on one of the big websites like fish4jobs.

I got 20-30 replies, and 3 or 4 were suitable, and I ended up hiring a lovely lady.

I am an ex-English teacher now working from home. Very good at spelling and grammar. Could easily do the job.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I have taken on a mumsnetter to work for me ad-hoc so am no longer looking for anyone. Thanks again everyone for your help :)
