not sure I should really be complaining about this

I've just been looking at my payslip and was surprised to see that I'm now paying back my student loan, even though I thought I didn't earn enough. Then I realised that my salary has been increased! I.E. I've been given a raise without being told!

I don't think it's a mistake because I've just finished my probation period, and when I started they said that there may possibly be the possibility of a potential payrise of maybe upto 500 pounds a year after probabtion depending on performance and how they're feeling. But no one has mentioned anything to me. I'm still there so I assumed I'd passed my probabtion but my boss is clearly not happy with me (a whole other thread) so I'd just assumed there wouldn't be any rise and didn't want to ask because I don't want a meeting with her where she goes on about every mistake I've made since I started and why I'm such a crap employee.

So anyway, I know this is a very very small problem, but should I say something? Incase there's been a mistake? Should I ask for it in writing? Would really rather not talk to my boss about it if at all possible (she's the only one doing of HR/payroll)

Sure it's a payrise? The tax free limit went up this month and I noticed my pay had increased by about £15, it's quite a big jump this time.

Sorry, compare your tax codes to work this out

vegetariandumpling · 28/04/2012 13:52

Thanks for the responses. How can I compare the tax codes? It looks like a rise because it would make my annual salary exactly 500 more than before iyswim. Although it could be changes in tax :S

My tax code is something like 726L, it will be on your payslip for sure, in roughly the same format. I has gone up a bit this time meaning you will pay less tax on the difference, e.g. previously it might have been 650L and it's gone up to 726L (the numbers are in thousands, e.g. 6500 and 7260), so I will pay not pay tax on £760 less than before. If you've got exactly £500 a year more, your tax code will have increased by at least 50. Call HMRC if you want confimation, they are very helpful!

Oops, £760 more than before!!

vegetariandumpling · 28/04/2012 14:37

Ah ok. In that case I think it has gone up, but I think I will call them to confirm so I don't have to talk to my boss Grin

Your pay slip should give you details of your gross pay, then your deductions. You should be able to tell from there if the gross has gone up.
