I don't appear to have any transferable skills

My job is at risk of redundancy at the minute and its made me think, I might not be able to get a job doing what I do now as there just isn't much work about, so I need to look at what skills I have to see what other work I could do. I did my degree in graphic design for print but now work in web design. I'm ok at design and ok at the technical side of things but not amazingly brilliant at either. But because its quite a specialised job I can't think of anything else I can move in to.

I've always worked in the public sector, and always designed education, online learning type sites. In one job I did a bit of training - showing other staff how to use some software - I was ok at that but get so nervous standing up in front of people I would dread it for days before.

I've never managed any other staff. DP said I'm quite organised so could work in admin, but that would pay less and we need my salary to cover most of the mortgage.

I don't know if I'm just feeling sorry for myself because morale at work is very low at the minute, but I'm finding it difficult to think what else I can do.

Maybe try to look into training in SEO and web marketing/analytics. That seems to be the way these days. Keep up the tech skills. Maybe work in setting up new sites?

Sorry about the Big R - we've all been there, and it is no fun. Things generally turn out for the best, this is an opportunity to do something else (better).

Learning and development (ie training within HR team for all departments)? Many use online training now so need tech savvy types.

I think that e learning is going to be big. A lot of the universities are doing their courses online to keep costs down. Could you not approach your local university/ college of further ed to see if you could offer your services.

Alternatively if you don't like web design then could you learn PHP or SQL and do database work.

well, you have followed briefs? Dealt with clients?? Managed projects - how long did each design last for? Did you have any budgets to stick to? worked to fixed time scales? Worked in a team? Had to deal with other disciplines??? like teachers? Proof reading? Checking? attention to detail? discussions when the brief isn't possible to manage expectations?
The above is for what I've done for project management, and I sort of thought some of your design might fit that category. Sorry if I've got it completely wrong.
Think about what your job involves, and that might give you other transferable skills.

Thanks for your replies - reading my post back I was feeling quite down this morning and I sound really negative! I prefer the design side to the technical side, so I don't think I want to (or could) go down the PHP, etc route. If there is design work involved in elearning I could work on that. Nextphase, I have done many of the things you have mentioned - I wasn't sure what actual job they could apply to though - do you work as a project manager?

I manage projects as part of my job. The rest of what I do is very specific to my background, so actually telling you what i do won't help (and might out me!).
I'm trying to get a part time job tho - flexi working turned down here, so what I've actually been doing is searching for all jobs within a specified radius of home, above a certain salary, part time (which removes most of the jobs!) and then reading the requirments to see if I might manage it.
