Hi, am currently a sahm with 2 kids aged 7 and 3. 3 yo is at morning pt nursery, starts ft in sept 2013. Am thinking of doing Pgce to teach adults, hopefully to start sept 2012 and do it locally, there are 2 unis nearby that still have places. But it is going to be abt 8 grand which I will have to get a student loan for. Does anyone currently working in this sector have any tips what's the current job situation like ( prob awful) and ux it worth getting in debt for? Hubby will support me to retrain , we have had the conversation already. TIA. Giulietta

sounds like a plan Wink

The job situation depends on what subject you will be teaching to the adults ...... we had a huge variety. I was going to teach in the care profession and the others included people going to teach in catering, first aid, sports massage, alternative therapies . so may I cann't remeb er them all ( we all learnt a lot when doing out teaching practices and assessments to each other before we were let loose on work places).

I dont know if it still works the same we but we had to have knowledge / a skill we were already proficient at in order to do the course pluse a degree level education ( as its a post grad level course)

so guess in answer to the question ...... it depends on whe sector you will be teaching in when you graduate.

I completed PGCE (FE) in 2003 via Oxford Brookes Uni.

I'm sure the situation has probably changed but at that point no one paid personally for the fees, instead we all worked either paid or voluntarily at local colleges and the college paid fees for us and gave us a day a week to study/attend the courses.

I think someone who isn't working in FE would struggle to do the coursework assignments as they are heavily classroom based, you'd end up hunting around for work-placements I think.

Might be worth getting in touch with your local colleges that offer the courses you'd be teaching first, explain your plans and you might well find they will help will experiance and if it goes well with fees too.
