Motivate me

Im self employed and freelance. Work has completely dried up since feb time and to be honest I have lost motivation due to this.

I usually get work from twitter but people just don't want to pay proper prices any more. :( I'm not the cheapest as I have to pay things - insurance, software, web hosting etc. I am nowhere near the priciest.

I'm getting to the stage where we really need me to generate some income.

I'm panicking because I'm due our 2nd baby at the end of this year and can't now look for a permanent job (which was my next step).

Can you guys motivate me into finding and achieving more work?

What line of work are you in Vickitiy?

Firstly congrats on the pregnancy.

I have some empathy, have been ttc, so when things are tough, have then felt "trapped" as joining a new company isn't ideal etc

A few thoughts without knowing what you do:

*Have you contacted all your previous clients? As a freelancer and previously as an employee that occassionally bought services, sometimes a well time approach is all that is needed, as the client be thinking about doing x and then you contact them.

  • Do you market yourself to new potentials? Can you? Can you more active on twitter if that is how you find your clients. Get out to a networking event (never much fun with out lots of drink I know...but even still!), it might help you feel like you are "doing something"?

  • Can you set your self a small target? x by x? If you are like me you could view things as one big giant problem "my pregnancy/freelance situ", when actually if you just focus on bringing in x by x and trying to forget the longer term for now.

  • Can you diversify? If the market really has dried up, can you transfer to other markets?

  • Try to put a positive face on. I just know that it can be easy to feel down and for that to come across to potentials clients. Try to ensure your tweets and communications are full of positivity and the success you are having (even if you are not) as I think that is attractive in itself.

Finally, if none of the above works, could you consider short term job contracts? If you don't want the hassle of biz dev or maybe need a break until after the baby arrives etc? They won't care that you are pregnant esp in the short term.

Hope that helps.
