Redundancy payment - not sure if it's right.

I was told my Notice of Redundancy payment was £1700 and Statutory Redundancy was £2450. Turns out I only get the £2450. What's the point of telling me I get Notice of Redundancy Payment when it is included in the Statutory Redundancy Pay? Is this right?

I'd ask for a full break down of the payment.

As far as I understand it you should get 2 weeks of gross pay for every yr you have worked for them under the age of 40, then 3 weeks for any yrs above that. That is/was statutory (check on the yougov website or google statutory redundancy pay). On top of that you should get your notice pay (so if you are on a months notice and you have been made redundant and left prior to the end of the notice period then you get that net payment), plus any outstanding holiday pay. And if your company give enhanced redundancy pay then you would get that too (you'd need to check your employment contract).

Having said all of that, I am by no means an expert and have based my answe to you on what I had.

Citizens Advice might be able to help.

Or I expect someone who knows what they are talking about will be along soon.

I'm not sure what you mean by "notice of redundancy payment". When the company wrote to you and said you were on notice of redundancy, did they specify the payment?

I think mycat is right - simplest way to resolve is just to ask your payroll team for the breakdown of your final payment.

The direct.gov website has a stat redundancy calculator

Thanks. I feel a bit daft for not getting this clarified when I had my redundancy meetings. I got 1 weeks pay for every year of service then 1.5 weeks for every year over the age of 41.

I think I got confused because HR broke it down to two clearly different sets of figures ie Notice of Redundancy Payment at £xx and Statutory Redundancy Pay at £yyy. When I queried the two sets of numbers I was given compared to what I received I was told the notice pay is my normal working salary which makes up the £xxx amount of the total received £yyy. So I receive one payment, not two. Does this make sense?

It sounds like the notice payment was in case they made a payment in lieu of you working your standard (contractual) notice period (PILON) - if you worked that, then you would have received the payment through your wages rather than a taxable, separate lump sum. So yes, it makes sense and sounds right, unless you didn't work your notice period.

Sorry to hear of you redundancy, there is a good guide on the MyFamilyClub website that might be of some use.
