due to childcare and work issues i feel i need to give up work to look after my twins. I am married and worked out we would get about £100 p/w in child tax credit. My question is that this is based on my zero earnings in the tax credit calculator but if I don't give up work untill say July, would my earnings to date be added to my husbands in which case we would get virtually nothing. Surely its based on your current circumstances and now what you earned 4 months ago into this tax yr. Many thanks, I cant seem to find a striaght answer anywhere

I think its your total income in the year that matters - ie if you earn 4 K in the tax year that would be added to income but not your whole salery for the year - I would check the calculator you used is up to date through as there have been some pretty big cuts this year in tax credits - just come in and I think possibly more to come next year

This was the problem we had last year - I gave up work in September, all I had earned was mat pay and annual (small) bonus but when I rang tax credits we got virtually nothing due to this. It's annoying but it's correct. Sorry.

As you're married your claim is based on the total income of your househoild not on your individual income. Not sure you're going to get. £100 a week tbh unless your husband is on a very low salary. The limit to get about £10 a week is £32k if you have two children I think - what is your DHs income?

thanks rock chick, thats exactly what i needed to know although im rather depressed about that! I still dont understand how they can do this, esp if you were living by your means whilst working and used all the money from the previous months!

I know, it's stupid but that was exactly the same for us - is there any way of you giving up work sooner so that u will earn less this tax year? Other than that, all I can suggest is only using £100 of your income each month between now and leaving your job, that way you can top up your tax credits each month out of the rest of the salary,

yes i could scrimp and save but next april is a long way off till we would get the 100 per week! is anyone else sure this is right - it's child tax credit of 100 per week we would get if i wasnt working and unfortuately 3 or 4 months pay this tax yr is a lot of money for me - £8k approx, im in a situation where im off with stress at the moment so do i drag it out knowing that i'll have no
income for the rest of the tax yr or finish it quick knowing i'll at least have some income??
