Jobs where you can get up and move around?

Just looking for suggestions really. At the moment I work in a library which is pretty desk based but some opportunities to get up and move about, shelve etc. I like the work, but just can't face going back to desk and office based work full time, which I'll need to do eventually. Can anyone suggest any career jobs where you can move around more? I'm interested in occupational therapy but won't be able to train for a long time, and thought in the short term of childminding, but actually think the latter wouldn't suit us as a family - we like a peaceful house! Any other ideas very welcome.

Are you a graduate? Teacher perhaps? (Interaction with people like OT too).

I am, but not sure about teaching for me. I was thinking of something less 'performancey'.

Invigilating exams is good for moving around (although have to say it can be very very dull). Also rather seasonal and not great rates of pay. I invigilate at two local schools and a university and after Easter it will start getting busy Grin

Ah just reread your OP and see you are looking for a career job. Probably not invigilating then. I also mark exam papers where I can walk around but need to spend a lot of time sitting down to get them done.

Darm I was going to say library. I work in a library (be it a prison library) and I am always up and down.

Youth work?

Maybe I just need to work in a different kind of library! How do you like prison library work, exogenesis? I am in a special library at a charity now so lots of it is searching, and not much shelving, although we do send out packs which is away from the computer.

Philbee I LOVE (excuse the shouting) working in a prison library. Always something going on.

Medical records department in a hospital. Interesting environment, some of the tasks involve a lot of walking around the different departments.

Hehehe - I was also going to suggest library work so perhaps you do just need to work in a different type of library. I'm in an academic library and find a good mix of sitting at my desk and moving about.

Ooh, LightPassenger, I was just going to post Medical Records! I worked in MR for a short while once, and just for fun we used a pedometer one day to see how far we walked. I covered over 2 MILES just trogging round the corridors collecting medical notes from Medical Secretaries' offices to return them to the box in my office that was being prepared for the following day's clinics. That job was mostly great fun as I spent the morning checking off the clinic notes that had been pulled from file overnight then got out and about collecting missing notes during the afternoon.

If occupational therapy is your long term goal then would you consider working as a health care assistant to gain some experience? Lots of moving around in that job and you can work quite closely with the OT's if you work on the wards

RockChick1984 · 08/04/2012 23:42

I used to work in retail management and never got 5 mins to stop running around!

amillionyears · 08/04/2012 23:53

Receptionist, medical receptionist

NeedToDoDusting · 10/04/2012 19:35

I'm a healthcare assistant and the challenge is finding time to sit down! Used to be a teaching assistant and that involved plenty of moving around too. What about looking for a job as an occupational therapy assistant if that's the field you ultimately want to work in? (Check out the NHS Jobs website).
