Time off for dependants

My little boy was sent home from school today. My husband had to leave work to look after him as our usual childcare is on holiday.

I thought this would be classed as emergency time off for dependants yet work are telling my husband he can't take today as unpaid leave and must work the hours back on Saturday.

Do you legally have to work the hours back that you take as emergency time off for dependants? I can't see anything on direct.gov.uk and he can't check handbook as he's not at work tomorrow. Any links would be gratefully received. Thanks

Does this help

"Your employer doesn't have to pay you for time off for dependants but they may choose to do so. You can check your contract of employment to see if there's a policy about this."

If he's making back the hours on Saturday though, surely he's going to be paid for those hours? If he doesn't make back the hours, then it's unpaid?

Sorry, misread your question. Yes, sounds like legally he should be able to take today as unpaid leave. Worth querying with HR?

Yes he is entitled to unpaid leave for that and shouldn't be made to make the hours up.

Thanks everyone, it's just as I suspected. Does anyone know of the specific law/have a link as I feel I need cast iron proof to show his manager

Just found concrete proof on citizen's advice website that you don't have to work the time back
