Expected to use personal laptop for work - insurance?

I'm a teacher and use my own laptop for preparing lessons, resources, assessments, reports etc. etc. Having looked at the small print on my contents insurance I've noticed that although laptops are included, they are excluded if they are: "...property held or used for any profession, business or employment".

Presumably that means that my laptop and DH's (he's also a teacher) is uninsured? Once upon a time I had a school laptop for use at home thanks to the 'Laptops for teachers' scheme but that was a decade ago and I'm no longer at that school.

Does anyone have any advice/bright ideas as to how I can ensure our laptops are insured but without the school having to buy every single teacher a laptop?!

Ooh - that's interesting - DH is an academic, and uses ours for work too. Should check our insurance. I suppose it might be worth phoning insurance co and checking - there must be thousands of people in the same situation.

That's to stop people claiming for business laptops on home insurance. If anything happens just say you were using it for personal use only.

On my own policy business equipment such as computers, laptops etc is specifically included up to the value of 4,000. The exclusion for 'property held for business purposes' probably means things such as a plumber's tools, goods to sell etc. If you're worried then give them a ring and check, but I doubt it will be a problem - a large proportion of people will use their computers for work to a greater or lesser extent.
