Confused about SMP and other things

I'm newly pregnant - about 7 weeks and trying to figure out our finances when the baby is here. Before my DH retrained and became self-employed, we earned the same. He now earns roughly £9K. My salary supports us entirely - rent, food, bills. He just about covers his debts.

I know I'll get 12 weeks at 90%, and I'll have about 20 days holiday to add to that. So we're OK for 4 months. After that, I'm completely freaking out. It seems we're going to be destitute because no matter how many benefit calculators I fill in, I can't get one to realistically apply our situation. Plus each time I do it, it comes up with a new figure!

SMP and child benefit will cover about half of our out-goings ONLY including rent, bills and food (obviously not including debts in that). Am I missing something? How do other low income families get by? I genuinely don't understand what we're entitled to, if anything.

I had hoped to take at least 6-9 months, but it's looking very unrealistic and I feel really depressed about it all. Childcare would wipe out my salary anyway so it seems to make no odds if I am working or not, which then takes me back to square one of being a single income family on £9K.

Sorry, stupid me - this should probably be in Money matters!

Save as much as you can before going on maternity leave.
We took a mortgage break but if you are renting I can see that won't help.

Not sure if you can get tax credits while on maternity leave? I found the forms so difficult to fill out that I didn't bother.

Can your DH get a job around his self-employment to tide you over? If childcare is going to wipe out your salary then I am sure you must be entitled to some kind of tax credits?

It does sound as though your DH being self-employed earning so little is a bit of a luxury you can't afford if you are going on maternity leave. Is he looking for a proper full time job?

You need to save. I get statutory maternity leave only. I am fortunate to be on a good wage but we saves like mad.

Bear in mind that you cant take your holiday after the initial 90 percent period without losing your entitlement to the rest of your maternity pay and maternity leave. Your employer might agree to pay you in lieu but they don't have to. You can take your holiday at the end of your maternity leave before you go back to work.

DH has said he will contract in his old profession if it comes to it. But his new self-employed career could be very satisfying, rewarding and lucrative if given half a chance. I guess it's got nine months to come good. Failing that, it's so flexible he is childcare in the day and sees clients in the evening.

I dunno, I think I'm just struggling to get a grip on what it will actually be like and I'm a total control freak.

Virgil that's good to know re holiday - I'll bring it up with my manager about what to do with it. Maybe I could use it immediately before maternity leave starts proper, so it still adds up.
