How many weeks of the 13 week entitlement can you take in one go?

I think it's in full week blocks & up to 4 a year. Up to employer though.

I think it's up to your employer?

naturopath · 06/03/2012 23:16

I think that's correct - must be taken in blocks of 1 week (i.e. your normal working week, so if you work Mon-Fri that would be 5 days) unless your employer agrees to a shorter period.

And it's up to four weeks per year per child - so if you had three children under 5, for example, you could take 12 weeks' leave (4 weeks x 3 children) (if your employer agreed to that).

I work for NHS and we can take more than 4 week blocks if we want and its cleared by management. You could even tag the 13 weeks onto mat leave!

My dd (14) is due to have a fairly big operation later this year. I work in NHS, does anyone know if I am allowed leave, as she will need some nursing at home to help her recovery at least for a few days afterwards?

karismatik · 07/03/2012 00:32

Sorry OP, inadvertently hijacked your thread there, sorry!

Pixelmama · 07/03/2012 20:39

No problem... and thanks for all the advice. Much appreciated.

Hi karismatic I don't think you can take parental leave for that as its to spend quality time with your children not care for them when they are ill. also parental leave is only for children younger than 14 I think.

You would be entitled to emergency carers leave.

karismatik · 08/03/2012 20:53

Oh thanks izzybizzy I didn't think parental leave would be right, for the reasons you give. The thing is, the operation is not an emergency as it is planned. I imagine, like most of this kind of leave, it will be dependent on my manager's discretion, so I hope they are in a good mood when I ask!
