Struggling to find work

Help. I am struggling to find work. I have an extensive career in a particular profession and have the usual "transferable skills". I don't seem to fit any specification. Like many Mums I am looking for flexible hours. I had a full time job which I managed to get part-time hours out of but was made redundant in 09. I then had a job based from home on a contract for two years. I then had to work full-time but ended up leaving because I couldn't cope with the hours and the demands of juggling. I have been out of work since. I've applied for junior roles but been told I'm over qualified, I've applied for jobs which match my skill set and not been successful. Jobs in my arena with good salaries are far away and I'd spend a large percentage of my salary on childcare and travel. Employers don't seem to look at transferable skills. We cannot afford for me to be out of work so the situation is becoming very stressful. I've thought about working freelance but would prefer being an employee.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear that it's such a nightmare - I feel your pain. I am also facing a world of stress trying to conquer the job market. I wondered if you have used linkedin and other networking sites as a tool to finding work? You can stick your latest CV up on there and get people to recommend you. I was approached for an interview solely off the back of updating my profile so I think it does work as a way to connect with people and reconnect with people you've worked with in the past - they may hear of something via the grapevine.
