Life after retail?

Hi need some advice please. My dh was sacked today with 1 weeks notice. He needs to find another job ASAP but after 20yrs as a retail manager he wants to get a more family friendly job. Can anyone give me some positive stories of life after retail? A career change that involves working with people but with good prospects and easy to get in to? I hope were not dreaming : (

Just to add he was on probation so they didn't need to give him any notice. he obviously feels like rubbish but he is so far keeping positive.

I'm in pretty much the same boat. I left a senior management position a couple of years ago to be a SAHM, determined to never go back. But I have recently been sucked back in. Still dreaming of that perfect non-retail job though Grin

Good luck getting out. Sad I couldn't take it if he got another retail job. The hours are ridiculous. Christmas & holidays are lonely times in my houseSad

What about a Customer Services job?

That's what I was thinking. Smile

I was a sales manager for a department store for a few years, I moved into field sales which to be honest is not as interesting - lots of time alone - but is 9-5, Mon/fri. Usually get a car, fuel card, phone etc too. Have a look on the grocer for similar jobs, feel free to pm me if you like :)

what about becoming a medical rep? I hear the hours and money are great

Thankyou. I don't think he'd like another sales target driven environment with all that pressure. He loves housing so maybe something along those lines.

I moved from retail to a bank, similar sort of job but no late night's or Sunday's! Although, that may not last...

My dh works in a call centre customer services dept, hours aren't fantastic but targets are based around customer satisfaction rather than sales. Depends what he wants more.

I moved from retail into Hotels. Similar skills needed, but as far away from family friendly hours as you can get.

I think something in customer service or training would really suit him. He needs something quick before his last wage runs out though.Sad

How is he doing alltheseboys? I do think it depends who he works for wrt retail for it being family friendly or not. Alot of shops only open during certain hours and don't have the wraparound hours like tesco etc. Has he looked at somewhere like Iceland? They have just won the britains best biggest employer award in the sunday times I noticed or best company to work for...there was a sign in their window. Also John Lewis partnership good. I am trying to think of some others... not boots or next, terrible

Thanks for asking agincourt. He's deciding between retail managing again & retail lecturing. But I think he will have to go back to retail Sad
