My daughter is a single parent with two boys who she Home-Eds. As the youngest is now 8 she has been under pressure by the Government to get a job (as there are so many applicants for each job now, I'm intrigued as to where from!). We have looked at Homeworking options but they are very limited, and really only suitable for earning 'extra' money on top of an existing income as the income from them is often somewhat unreliable.

She does not have the luxury of an existing income so needs something she can earn a reliable living wage from. She has considered starting a business, but most businesses start slowly and there seems to be little support until they get off the ground.

She is an intelligent girl, but her work experience, due to circumstances has been limited to mainly admin and care work, and no specific specialisation in any particular subjects or trades. Her Dad and I are prepared to help - and already do, but if she had to go out to work it would likely be for several days in the week which would mean us taking on the parenting/teaching roles instead - and neither of us are that young or well.

Does anyone have any suggestions for work from home that can pay a decent income and give her enough work immediately, or within a short period of time?

You may be better posting this on the Home Ed forum as there has to be a way round for parents who choose not to send their children to school

It doesnt matter how much she earns, if she is currently used to living on benefits then she will be on more than that even if she earns £10 per month because tax credits will top up her income, the only thing she will lose out on is housing benefit, and if she is self employed, her business will probably be operating at a loss in the first year (you can claim expenditure for everything) so she wont lose out on housing benefit either. email me on here or to [email protected] and ill talk you through it all as I have just gone self employed :) xx

Isnt this the question all mums ask and the answer is there isnt one and find the question a bit nieve in particualarly when so many mums cant find work to fit around the childcare. A decent income? £20k min, they you have to have a skill or be able to offer someone something great, have a USP. You cant sit in the house and expect to earn this without having been in the workplace recently, having picked up skills, quals, experience and be able to run a business. You cant just become self employed cos it suits you- you have to offer a service or product that is profitable and there is a market for it. So many people think this is the answer but its not.

If your daughter is so willing to earn and learn then she can go back to college or get a job. Its not up to you to sort this out for her either. Dont blame the government for her lifestyle chose!

The answer is no! - if it was yes then we'd all be doing it, many of us have bust a gut since leaving school, struggled to find a job that pays and now are self employed again working and battling with the economy, while doing the school run, paying for childcare, working late into the night and missing out with time with the children. No sick pay, no holiday pay...Its a tough life!
