Working for free to get a foot (back) in the door?

Are there any sites similar to working mums which offer something similar to internships to anyone looking to get some up to date work experience, maybe assisting on a project? Ideally holy grail working flexibly from home stuff but will compromise Wink

I'm just aware that when we move back to the UK I might need to work for free to get some UK based experience and refs and not sure how to go about it.

I've been thinking about this and am going to ask peers of mine if I can "shadow" them for a day or too, or even observe. I don't know of any sites though. What about professional bodies in your area of work - they might have some advice about this?

I'm doing this, two days a week, for a friend, in the vain hope that something will come of it either in my friends company or in the same university department. Im enjoying it, although its stupidly specialised im not sure how it will help in my job hunt. It depends what you want to do, but try your local volunteer beareaux, you'd be surprised what sort of work they have on offer.

Volunteer bureau is a good idea. I just don't have any contacts and what I'm doing now is very irrelevant so I have to choose between continuing or trying to get started in a different area with limited experience.

I feel your pain i really do, its much the same for me - i got lucky when my friend offered me this project. Do try the volunteer beaureaux, don't get roped into charity shop work, unless you want to, there really is interesting stuff out there.
