interview for job type that I did 20+ years ago..............

Hi

I have a job interview on tuesday for a receptionist position.

When I first started working this was the line of work I was first in, but I did hotels to begin with and then moved into the corporate banking world again just on reception. Fast forward 20 years and prior to being made redundant 2 years ago I was PA to the MD so had a much more interesting and challenging role.

I took a couple of years off and looked after my son and in the mean time we have also moved house.

This new position is in a hospital environment so once you learn the ropes I imagine the role would be like any other reception role.

Just wondered it you had any tips as to how to answer possible questions in a positive light as to why I am applying for a reception role when I am capable of so much more. My reasons are that it is part-time and once you leave the front desk your responsibility ends - I will not be tied to my email and receiving calls and resolving problems when I leave the office which was what my previous job was like. Part of me feels like I am stepping backwards and the money I will be earning was what I used to spend on travel and lunch so I am not motivated by my pay packet!!!!

The time is right to step back into the job market and as it has been 12 years since my last interview I want to shine :) :)

Thanks

Just say exactly what you've said...

You were a receptionist once upon a time and really enjoyed it. You're looking for a part-time job you can leave at the door at the end of the day. Makes total sense.

PA jobs are full on these days and it's very difficult to find something part-time. I'm not surprised you want to take a step down with small people in tow.

As you say this will be a piece of cake for you but a great confidence builder. If you want to move on and up again later on you can Smile

I think you also need to consider the challenges of working in the hospital environment. It is not quite like other reception roles - depending on the area you will be the first line for confusing, worried and anxious people (patients) and their relatives. It can be challenging! You need to show that you feel you will be able handle situations where you have to convey that people will be waiting longer than expected and manage their expectations. Understanding patient confidentiality will also be important.
I hope this hasn't put you off - (I work elsewhere in a hospital not in reception) the reception staff can make a big difference to how the public perceive and feel during their hospital visit.

How did it go?

Lexie1970 · 25/02/2012 15:56

I think it went ok but you can never tell can you??

As usual you think of questions you should/ could have asked after the event. I don't know whether there is going to be 2nd stage interviews or if that is it. Will ring the recruitment agency on wednesday if I have not heard anything.

Thanks for your advice all

x
