at what level are HMRC interested in those not registered?

Wondering if I'll get flamed for this post, but hopefully not.

I am a small online seller and I'm fairly sure that one of my main competitors is not registered with HMRC (but of course I cannot be 100% sure on this). I wonder about reporting them, however they are not a huge seller (probably turn over £1-2k per month) and therefore may even be under the income tax bracket. Would HMRC even be interested and/or investigate.

Hazie,
Not daft at all.
If you are selling your own belongings that you no longer need (the legal term is chattels) the money you make from that is not taxable
so baby toys, clothes, books, furniture, old lawnmower, old car etc
BUT if you make more than £10,000 a year selling tat from the house, you might have to explain it
AND
if you buy to sell (even buying two babygros with the intention of selling one) then you are a trader

look up my name on ebay (without the 2) and click on the "me" - lots of information there. I am the 'TiP' that posters on the boards there refer to.

Brilliant thank you. Smile

Talkin, no the other sellers (know HMRC don't; did 18 months FTA with VAT office back in the day LOL)

Ebay are generally helpful; DH is a rare specialist in his field so plenty of people just C&P his adverts but ebay always delete those entries. He sells technical stuff so important.
