How would you define a "weekend" shift

if you worked night shifts (ie 9.45pm-7am).

Would you say you were working at the weekend if you were doing Friday and Saturday nights, or Saturday and Sunday nights????

i used to work permanent nights, i think fri and sat nights is a real w/end, you start fri night and finish sun afternoon when you wake up

working sat night and sun night isnt the same, you really have sat daytime off (although you spend it all in a bad mood cos you have the fact you are going to work shortly in the back of your mind

i used to prefer fri and sat nights, if i had nothing on, cos on sunday afternoon when you wake up you feel you still have some weekend left

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 24/01/2006 16:19

hmmm - that's what I think too - but manager at work says "well Friday isn't the weekend"........

tsk

but its friday night

the weekend starts friday at midnight really, so probably before your first break!

does he do nights? you dont have a clue until you have done them yourself

nailpolish · 24/01/2006 16:21

is to do with wages? or shift patterns? nights cause no end of problems, i sympathise with you

coppertop · 24/01/2006 16:23

I know that when I used to work nightshifts the only shifts classed as weekend work were those that actually started on a weekend. So Friday night to Saturday morning was not a weekend shift but shifts starting on a Saturday night or a Sunday night were weekend shifts. I think it depends on who you work for tbh.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 24/01/2006 16:23

yes she's done nights - did 3 years of them, and still does the occasional one just to "touch base" (urghh as she says LOL) with the night staff....

Just spoken to my manager on the phone about next weeks rotas - I'm worked Friday and Saturday last week will work the same this week AND next week, despite asking if I could do TWO weekends in a row so that I could get into a better cycle with my weekends off. As my church commitments are changing slightly and if I'd 'swapped' my weekends off around then it would be fine.

Do you think I should call back and clarify when a "night staff" weekend is??

Where I used to work the weekend was 12:00 Saturday morning to 12:00 Sunday night as that was what the staff ahndbook said. Therefore, only the latter part of the Friday night/Saturday morning shift was paid at a premium or the earlier part of Sunday night/Monday morning.

AFAIK a company can define it how they want to, does yours have a written definition?

nailpolish · 24/01/2006 16:25

i think you should clarify it. everywhere i have worked fri and sat nights is a weekend. but as CT says everywhere is different.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 24/01/2006 16:27

oh we don't get paid anything extra for weekends, so it's not a wage issue - it's a shift issue.

Bl**dy cheek too, manager says "well xxxx (deputy manager who did the rotas) wants you to work next Saturday as the girls are having a leaving do out for xxxxx and they all want to say goodbye. Fair enough, but she could have asked me before putting me down, especially since we'd already had a conversation about swapping my weekends prior to that being arranged.

ahh - I've only just spoken to her on the phone, and I'm not very good at 'over the phone' conversations.....don't find it very easy to put across what I'm trying to say not sure how I can call back so soon as ringing and ask her to clarify...

AgHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

right that feels slightly better.

Have confirmed that apparently despite 2 of the other girls I've worked with (saying Fri/Sat was their "weekend") a weekend is apparently a Sat/Sun nights - and it's just because those two never work Sunday nights. aRGHH.

I wrote down why I needed to "swap" weekends off/on before the last roat (this weeks) was done and basically what I said was (from what I can remember)

Hi xxxx

Is there any chance I can "swap" my weekends off. I'm currently working weekend of the 21/22 and next weekend should be on the 3/4 of February. However the services at church are changing and I'm unable to work the the 1st and 3rd Saturday nights in the month. Rather than messing anyone else around and asking them to work back to back weekends, I'm willing to work the 27/28th (so two weekends on the trot) which would make my next weekend the 10/11th of February

Thanks

HRHQoQ

Obviously it was slightly better written than that as I wrote it at the start of a shift, rather than after I'd only had a couple of hours sleep after a long shift (ie now - I worked last night LOL(.

They've asked me to write it down "in plain English" for them......
