Proofreading website or sports franchise - please help me decide!!!

I am torn between starting these two things - here are some pros and cons of both and I would be very grateful for any opinions at all, either way!

Proofreading/editing PROS

  • this is the business I am already in - worked for publishers before having DC so already have some contacts (not loads)
  • I find the work comes pretty naturally to me and I do a good job (at the risk of showing off)
  • easy online process after actually securing work, as everything can be done via internet including payment
  • I can potentially source work from all over the world

Proofreading/editing CONS

  • you just can't really make a great deal of cash
  • I can't imagine the overall life satisfaction of knowing I've made lots of documents correct over the years would be that high Grin

Children's sports franchise (sorry to be cagey about which exact one!) PROS

  • it's a sport I have been doing for over 10 years and really believe in
  • it would give me a lot of pleasure to know I was "giving something back" to children and equipping them for a healthy active life - good exercise habits you learn at this age tend to stick
  • the security of being "looked after" by a tried and tested brand
  • possible higher income

Children's sports franchise CONS

  • I just don't know if I'm a confident enough teacher. I might be! I just don't know yet and worry that the whole thing would fall flat on its face and I wouldn't be able to control the children or they wouldn't like me. I'm a fairly quiet person - not hugely outgoing or exuberant, which is probably what you need to be - but I do love children.
  • I balk at all the licence fees/hall booking fees + VAT that the franchise charges. Plus the initial layout of several grand, which I'd have to get a loan for from bank/parents/children's piggy banks etc! The cash I would have to stump up to them on an ongoing basis seems never-ending. Sad

Has anyone done either of the above and has a story to tell? Would love to hear any advice - thanks! Grin

No experience, sorry...but could you attend a lesson at another branch to test out your teaching skills? Am sure the franchise owner will be keen to help you choose them! I have personally left classes with DC where the teacher hasn't been engaging...not saying you wouldn't be, but it sounds like you have reservations about some of your abilities in the teaching.

From what I have seen of kid related franchises (I used to manage the advertising for the local NCT mag, which carried lots of franchise adverts) you have to work really hard to make the money - ie classes every day and also taking on staff. Depends if your motivation of doing good will carry you through the hard work...

I guess it also depends on where you are "at". Eg if you have 2 young DCs, maybe it isn't the time to start up a franchise (although I know people do) and doing something you know would make more sense.

Not sure if that helps much. Good luck.

Why not do both, proofreading on the side of the franchise, as you can pick it up in the evenings and at quiet times of year for the sports franchise.
