I work full time at the moment but considering going part time when my Son goes to school so i can be there to drop him off and pick him up from school.

I am a single mother.

PLEASE CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF I WILL BE WORSE OF FINANCIALLY WORKING PART TIME?

Thanks in advance!

Depends really.

I dropped 6 hrs a week and tax credits slightly went up to compensate. Not earning as much but also qualify for a small amount of housing benefit which helps.

Mentally it was the best thing I ever did and I am dreading the day I have to go full time Grin

Go to entitledto.com and it will tell you if you can get help and how much tax credits you might be able to get.

I may regret this, but how could you possibly not be worse-off part time? Confused

If it were possible to just decide you didn't want to work full time and get the state to make up the difference so you could reduce your hours with no financial impact, surely everyone would do it?!

Perhaps I'm being a bit naive, I don't know.

Don't forget to factor in all the costs that change - so if you were FT you'll have wrap around school childcare to pay, but if your do short hours in the middle of the day, can you really fit in enough hours after you have travelled to work after the drop off, and back again before the pick up ? Have you looked at doing 2 or 3 full days and having 2 days off - you still get to collect sometimes and know all his friends, the teachers and other parents, but your costs mean you don't have to travel on those 2 days, against paying out for childcare on the working days (but you'll probably get more hours in).
You will have a personal tax allowance (about £8100 I think at the moment) which is the amount you cn earn before you start paying any tax, so, whereas obviously you will be earning less gross, your net pay might not come down as much as you think.

I am worse off, just not a massive amount. My net pay didn't go down as much as I thought due to what Back for good said.

Also don't have to pay for childcare as I am there for school pick up.

As soon as my health issues resolve themselves I will be going back full time. I didn't go part time on a whim and expect the state to make it up.
