Anyone had experience of workplace bullying??

My poor other half is being bullied at work and has been for the past few months, but of all people his own bosses. he works for a small family owned scaffold firm just a married couple in charge so nobody higher to complain to but its really getting to him now. 1 of his so called mates has been promoted a tiny bit so now works in the office with the bosses instead of going out with the other lads. to make himself seem better than everyone hes been stupidly telling tales about everyone, the latest being my dp.

I wont go into things that have gone on but lets just say the 2 who own it are doing everything they can to get him to leave, i hate seeing him go in every day, its like watching a child go into school when hes getting bullied, luckily all the other lads there are on his side too, but some of the things they've accused him of are stealing from them (its a scaffold firm, how exactly he is of meant to of stolen all this with no transport is beyond me), not working hard enough yet hes working 7am till 6pm at least 3 days a week. Hes been there 8 years so i know they cant just sack him for no reason at all but still i wouldnt put it past them.

Im 20 wks pregnant, his is the only wage coming in and were just about managing but all this is making us stressed to bits, him cos he has to go in each day and me cos there's nothing i can do really to help. Just wondered if anyone knew about what he can do or has anyone been through a similar thing and been ok. Hes keeping a diary of everything they have said and done to him, its about 2 years long already, thanks in advance

Well he can raise a formal grievance but I'd question how much value that would bring in those circumstances.

I presume he is already looking for another job?

Yes he has thought about that, but the owners arent exactly the play it by the book type of people, they take people on, use them for a few months then get rid and start again, as soon as someone challenges them they're gone basically.

He has been looking for other places for months now but the way the job market is its not likely he can walk into somewhere. what im most concerned about is if indeed they can decide to just get rid of him on the spot, hes been there 8 yrs, has a contract and all but i wouldn't put it past them. the last person they sacked had been there 5-6 months and they let him go the day before xmas eve after making him work overtime till 7pm at night. they're just really horrible people...

Well they can't just get rid of him on the spot no, not after 8 years, although the accusations of stealing would concern me as for that type of thing they could. Obviously they'd have to have reasonable evidence which would be difficult to manufacture, but not necessarily impossible.

I do sympathise, horrendous situation to be in.

They have no evidence of him stealing as he hasn't done anything wrong, ironically the person they have promoted who has the sun shining out of him is the one who has been stealing from them, i've told dp to just say that next time hey accuse him of it. Im glad to have that knowledge though that they cannot get rid of him on the spot, its a small relief at least, thanks
