Pricing advice

Can anyone help me with some advice? I need some help with pricing. I have a freelance job for a one person start-up company who has asked me to produce a range of Fabric Designs for Baby wear as well as some Designs of the actual products as well, such as a baby wrap and a blanket. I said I charged 35eur per hour. She cannot afford to pay this, so we agreed that she would start to pay me when her products started to sell and that it would be per design instead. I don't know how much to charge her, but have been giving her lots of creative advice and probably spent about 5 hours of my time in meetings with her and research as well as initial sketches.
I am an experienced designer, but have not worked in a while as I had a son and then have been focusing on either looking for a full time job, freelance work and other commitments.
I really want to make a go of a freelance career and see this as a starting point.
I don't have a lot of time though and want to get a fair price for what I do.
She is a communications and marketing expert who I may be able to also get help from.
As well as that she is a new Mum and I want to help her get a project off the ground as I can identify with her reasons for doing it.
Can anyone offer advice on what I should do in this situation? I asked for a percentage in the company but she doesn't want this.
It would be good for my portfolio and to get me back into designing again. My portfolio can be viewed here www.genevievecreigh.com.
Any advice is much appreciated!

Could you ask for a share of the income generated by your designs?

Hi

Firstly, well done for getting ongoing on your freelance career. Nice website :)

I'd agree with MarionCole. I would work backwards. What is she selling each item for? I would have thought % of the sale or profit would be a fair deal. Obviously start high 30% (?) and she can negotiate down! I?d suggest this is an ongoing arrangement as you have been so generous to her.

As an aside, are you getting everything you can from her? So ensuring you are on her site and that you can mentions the work on yours. For the help she has given you, I?d hope she?d be very accommodating with providing free promo for you. You need something on your site/blog etc "I am so excited to be working for xx, as she launches her range of beautiful xxx". I loved the line of the xxx, I could really understand why customers would love her garments" etc - please ignore my design ignorance!

Hope that helps.

WS

Sorry, make that for the help you have given HER!!!

Thank you Watersign and MarionCole, I appreciate your feedback and compliment on my site. I might talk to her about a share instead. I have also used a few groups I'm a member of on linked-in to ask advice from. I thought that Mumsnet would have been good to ask from a Mums point of view as I'm sure I'm not the only one out there whose confidence needs to be boosted when you're trying to work again after kids. I definitely need to start using my blog and yes once the design work is well under way I can promote myself through what I am working on for her. My son starts school in May (I live in Holland) and I can't wait to have a bit more time to spend on developing a career (though I will miss him).
