help - I have just gone back to my old firm after 3 yrs' absence and a lot of networking etc to a wonderful job share which is what I have wanted for ages .... although, yes, you guessed it - I am pg!! I am on a temp contract meant to be going perm in March after a short trial period & a long holiday. I don't want to jeopardise:

  1. the job
  2. the chance of my permanent contract

BUT ...
I will start to show soon & the firm has not always had a great reputation in the past for looking after mums (altho now I am in a jobshare i have taken step down in terms of old reponsibilities etc)

HELP. Someone please offer me a pragmatic, informed, wise and possibly legally-informed opinion on what I should do!!

I think you should tell them asap - as that should make them wary and treat you with kid gloves for fear of a potential discrimination claim.

Do you do anything in work that could be hamful - lifting, chemcicals etc ? If so you should tell them so they can take it into account. They shoudl do a risk assessment when you tell them anyway

Congrats by the way!

My friend at work is 14 weeks PG and has just landed a £40,000 a year job at an Oil Refinery!!! They offered her the job even though she told them straight away that she was PG. The company was obviously keen to employ her. Your situation is tougher though. If it were me, i would push for the permanent contract earlier than March. Absolutely no idea about the legalities though - could they just terminate your temp contract in March? I would try to secure a permanent contract first before I told them.

I don't do anything dangerous at all - apart from commute in the rush hour!

I think if I just give myself a deadline - ie tell them by 14 weeks - then I will feel more in control.

But I had my HR interview today, a follow-up one for the perm. contract & first one since finding out I was pg. I felt quite dishonest, but I am only just 10 wks gone.

I always thought it was the done thing not to tell anyone until the 1st scan - not until Feb 7th ... !

risk assessment also covers things like your chair and vdu, climbing stairs plus places to have a rest etc i also made sure that things like - antenatal trips were paid for if in work hours, if i was too exhausted could go home paid. it's all in our policy but made them write it on my risk assessment too.

get hold of your policy and have a a quick look - it'll tell you when you legally need to tell them but I'm sure its as late as 13weeks before due date. It'll also tell you what you'll be entitled too. Policy will also discuss risk - the company is legally bound to provide a risk assessment, even if you think you don't do anything dangerous.

btw - congrats.

Just go on and on about how much you ate over Christmas, wear baggy clothes and tell them when you want to.

OK, I'm back in tomorrow and have decided not to tell them until the scan. I am over the worst of the morning sickness & nt showing yet .. so cross fingers that they will have decided to get me the permanent contract before then anyway ........
