getting feedback from job applications

I applied for a job I was really very keen on a couple of weeks ago. I felt like I met all of the essential criteria, albeit in a very similar but not identical field (working for a research institute rather than a university).

I wasn't shortlisted (which is a bit sad), and would really like feedback so I know whether it was my application, as I haven't applied for a job in ages and was a bit rusty, or a lack of relevant experience. Or maybe something else I haven't thought of!

Do you think it's weird to ask for feedback when I didn't even interview? Would I ask their HR or the contact given at the application stage (the post reports to that person)? I will be applying for similar jobs, but they don't come up very often so I really want to get it right next time.

I think it's fair enough to ask for feedback on an application. But be aware that the employer might not be willing or able to give you any, especially if there have been a lot of applicants as potentially they could have hundreds of people wanting feedback. Or you might just get a generic answer, saying that the candidates they shortlisted were a better match for the job specification, or something, which wouldn't really give you much to go on.

I applied for two jobs recently where I wasn't shortlisted despite having what I thought was relevant experience. Both times I sent a polite email asking for feedback (once to HR and once to the recruiting manager) but did not hear anything back from them, although to be fair I did not chase the emails up. I think a phone call would probably be better if you are really keen to get feedback, and I'd start with HR - they can always pass you on to the relevant manager if necessary. Good luck!

Not weird, but be prepared for them to take a while to get back and don't hound them.

Thanks, it can't hurt to ask politely - will fire off an e-mail to their HR guys tomorrow. when i should be working in my current job
