Part time working hours - how should they calculate my holiday

Sassparilla · 03/01/2012 12:35

I have, for the past 5 years worked part time hours (31.5 hours per week) and have always had my holiday calculated in hours rather than days.

I work 5 days but do reduced hours (5.5 hrs) on a Mon/Wed/Fri. My full time holiday entitlement would be 30 days.

HR are now telling me that it is 'better' to use days rather than hours for my holiday entitlement as I am in work 5 days per week. I think this means that I am losing out re bank holidays

Not quite sure why things have changed since last year (and the previous 4 years!)

Who is right??? And who benefits if they leave my holiday as 30 days rather than 190 hours???

Thanks

I think it's certainly easier if you work the same hours each day to do it in days rather than hours.

Why would you think you'd lose out on bank holidays? If you work every day you'll get 8 (or 9 this year) bank holidays same as everyone else.

Sorry, ignore me, just seen you don't work the same hours everyday.

Still, why would you lose out?

MelodyPondering · 03/01/2012 13:10

That doesn't make sense if you don't work the same hours every day surely? I think it should be done in hours. I will try and paste the calculation my work uses....

MelodyPondering · 03/01/2012 13:16

Actually, if you're 5 days then you won't be missing out on bank holidays as you will have the day off the same as everyone else?

titchy · 03/01/2012 13:20

You would lose out slightly on BHs - imagine you have a colleague who works the same pattern as you, but does her full day Monday instead of Tuesday aas you do. Her BH monday would give her 7 hours of leave, yours only 5.5.

If the other BHs fall mainly on a Monday this year you'd probably lose out overall, but they might not - and your 'loss' could be balanced by any Tues/Thurs BHs we have.

Sassparilla · 03/01/2012 13:32

Thanks all - reason I mentioned BH was as Titchy explained it.

Ignoring the bit re BH should my holiday's be worked out in hours or days as I don't work the same hours every day??

No, she won't lose, she will still be getting a bank holiday based on your hours.

MelodyPondering · 03/01/2012 13:34

It won't make any difference doing it in hours or days. Your average day is 6.3 so in hours would be 189, which is exactly the same as 30 days iyswim!

MelodyPondering · 03/01/2012 13:35

her hours...

titchy · 03/01/2012 14:02

Melody she COULD lose out....

Very simple scenario using the colleague's pattern I mentioned above. For simplicity's sake they both take their 30 days hol as 6 x full weeks at the same time. So they have still worked the same number of hours.

BUT, again fro simplicity's sake let's say there are 4 BHs a year, all falling on a Monday. During those BH weeks Sass works Tues and Thuirs full days, so 14 hours, plus Wed and Fri, short days so 11 hours. Total Sass works those 4 BH weeks is 4 x 25 hours - 100 hours.

Colleague works Thurs as full day, 7 hours, plus Tues, Wed and Fri as short days, so 3 x 5.5 hours. Total each BH week of 23.5 hours, x 4 weeks, so 94 hours.

Sass therefore works 6 hours a year more than her colleague.

Keep it in hours!

3/5 of your days are shorter and 2/5 are longer.

As long as you take at least 2/5 of your holiday entitlement, ie 12 days, on your longer days, you won't lose out. Then you'll have 18 days left to use on shorter days, including, say, 5 on bank holidays which fall on shorter days.

If you manage to take more than 12 days of your entitlement on your longer days, you'll actually be better off this way.

MelodyPondering · 03/01/2012 15:59

If you do it in hours and take all your leave on your longer days, then actually you would only have 25 days holiday a year...surely that's not better!
