Coming to all you fabulously creative types for some inspiration. I am a content strategist / writer / editor / big content project freelance person. I am putting together a website - at last - to market myself a bit. Want to call it something that I could also call a company if I start one; don't want to call it my name. What do you think of:

Nutritional Content
Vitamin C (C= content, copy)
Lightbox Content
Brightbox Content
Brightspot Content

I like the cook/nutrition-style stuff if I can think of anything; would like to use 'Nutritional content for your website' as a tagline.

Any thoughts?

If you want it to be the name of your company, you want it to be obvious what the company's purpose is. I'm afraid that the names you give don't really seem to add up: are you a specialist in food-related content? The 3rd, 4th and 5th suggestions suggest something more like energy/electricity specialisation. Sorry, I just don't quite get the message you're trying to convey. Really don't try to be too clever, especially if you don't want to limit your potential client-base. If your name sounds too specialised, people won't bother contacting you if they're from other fields.

jkklpu argh you are right. I am trying to be too clever. I always tell clients not to be too clever with web stuff and here I am...

Back to drawing board, watch this space...

I'm not exactly sure what you do, I think I get it though. But my two cents would be that if you're trying to sell is yourself (your ideas and abilities, your unique brand) then you should definitely use your own name. As using a company name is just moving yourself away from your product by one step. People who deal with you should not have to remember you by anything other than your name, best for word of mouth etc.

You may have a very valid reason you cannot use your name however? It's no Eva Braun is it? Grin

:) I do see your point, I just don't to call my website 'firstname-surname.com'. It seems sort of naff to me iykwim! Unless you are really well-known. Goodness this is harder than I expected!

I think for the purposes of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) you will want what you do or a common keyword included in your business name. I am no expert but from running my own web business I understand that this can make a massive difference when potential clients enter a search term to the postion you appear on the list returned by Google. So ask yourself what search term would people enter into Google if the were looking for a service such as yours?

I'm sorry this doesn't sound very innovative and catchy and I don't know what they best keywords are for your work but LuckyCFreelanceEditors.co.uk might be an exmaple of something that would work well from Googles point of view. You may well have to strike a compromise with what sounds cool and what works with Google. Of course this all depends on if you are expecting potential customers to find you on Google.

An exciting venture for the new year - Good luck

SEO has changed over the years. Now its more about ripples (so get LinkedIn and Facebook activity going) and read the content to get as many of the key terms you want in there. Google analytics is quite good. Set up a form. For people to join a e-mailing list, then use a mail systen like Constant Contact to mail catalogues, offers, newsletters etc out. Is all helps to push you up searches. You can probably do a trial on adwords but I have found that it isn't worth it unless you are large and have a decent budget. Pay per click is good too.

Ask mumsnet how much they'd charge for an online clickthrough ad also try to get coverage in freemags (like Parents) with info on how you set up your business, working mum etc....
