Giving up work, what happens now?

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but here goes....

To cut a long story short, I'm a mother of 3 and have always worked but since DC 3 was born in February this year, things have become increasingly complicated sorting everything out as we have no childcare, no family nearby or anything, so after a lot of soul searching and mutual discussion and agreement with DH, I will be resigning from my job in the New Year.

Apart from the obvious thing of handing my notice inGrin, what else do I need to do/ who else will I need to inform, etc? As I say, I've always worked so I have no experience of this. DH earns just about enough to support us, and he can always top up and do extra shifts as needed

I think that's it, isn't it? Maybe the tax credit stuff - do you have to tell the DSS about it? How do you feel about it?

There is no one really to tell. You can register with the job centre but as your not looking for a job you won't get any benefits. As said above tax credits is about it.

Thank you for your replies. How do I feel about it? Not sure really, but I feel like I'm not doing either my paid job, or my role as wife or mother efficiently at the minute, and I'm hoping that leaving work will help that. I'm still going to do a few shifts a year to keep up my professional registration (nursing) and if it really doesn't work out, I can always go back to work I guess. I won't know until I try!

Good luck! I do one day a week at work and find that it's enough right now. I hope it works out for you.

Make sure that the child benefit is in your name so that you get national insurance credits. (used to be home responsibilities protection but has recently changed )

Thank you. I did initially ask to drop to one day a week, but my boss refused it, hence the big discussions with DH and deciding to just give up work for now. Feeling a little nervous, but also a little excited. Time will tell!
