....oh and guess what????? I'm the only woman!

I work as a Planner in the technology projects department in a bank.

There are around 20 Planners. I'm the only female. I was started as Junior Planner on £40 a day less than the rest, as I only have 2 or 3yrs experience. However, that was a temporary thing and I was supposed to be raised to the full rate within 6 months (thats this month).

I've not only had NO payrise, but have discovered they have raised the starting rate by another £30 a day. SO I was started at £40 a day less then the original starting rate... and that figure has been raised by another £30.

So... after 6 months I'm sitting £70 per day less than the Old Boy Network.

I have asked for, at the very least a rise in rate to the agreed rate I was to be on after 6 months. AND they have been "discussing it" since Friday morning!!! What's there to discuss?

Can you tell I'm pissed off? Who ever said discrimination wasn't blatant!

colditz · 09/01/2006 13:27

Oh MY GOD that is totally 1940's!

tribunal them !!!!!!!!!

Go and hit them or something!!!!!

Am enraged on your behalf.

anorak · 09/01/2006 13:29

OMG toothache that's so much money!

bubblerock · 09/01/2006 13:32

That's disgusting! Take a look at the equal pay act

Toothache · 09/01/2006 13:33

Ah now here's how it works.... coz I'm a Contractor, they can pay me whatever they like! They are getting away with it by calling me a 'Junior'.... but I can assure you I'm not doing anything less than they are.... and even if I was, it's certainly not £70 per day less!!!

OP posts:
bubblerock · 09/01/2006 13:35

Have you got a job description?

Toothache · 09/01/2006 13:37

Yes Bubblerock.... loosely described as a job description. Planning Analyst is a relatively new role in banking.... we're all from the Construction Industry. So the job descriptions are still kind in development. But we're all in the same boat.

Do you have a union? This is bread and butter stuff to them!

(Used to be a teacher, so big on unions here!)

codthemod · 09/01/2006 13:41

are you a brickie toothy/

butty · 09/01/2006 13:44

I think that you will find that as the amount has changed with your 6 month contract, your pay will not have been altered as you signed to the £40.00 per day, although in hinesight, when your contract is due to renew you should be on no less than the £70.00 per day.
Although i would certainly look into the amount when training is not over!!

bubblerock · 09/01/2006 13:44

It would be good if you could get your hands on one of the blokes job descriptions and compare them. If they are the same then you should be able to do something (haven't a clue what though) If they offer you the rise ask for back pay and throw in a few 'equality' remarks, they may get a bit worried and pay you accordingly. Let us know what happens, hopefully someone will be more help than I am!

butty · 09/01/2006 13:45

Sorry, that should say when training is over!!!

Toothache · 09/01/2006 13:50

Butty - It was £40 per day less than the guys rate. Which is now £70 per day less than them.

Its a huge pay gap!

I understand that I won't be brought up inline with them now, but I'd still like an extra £40 per day as per my initial belief when I signed the contract.

I don't have a leg to stand on coz I'm a Contractor..... my contract is week to week. They could just tell me to bugger off.

Bubblerock - Oh it is the same as their job description... they have not defined Junior and Senior Planning Roles.... just the role of a Planner.

lol Cod at the thought of me as a brickie! Hahahaaaa.... nah can't see me getting my hands dirty. But I'd be the one telling them how many bricks they needed and when they would need them.

Sorry if i misunderstood.

I would definately ask for a £40 rise when your 6 months is up.

Should they start to be funny buggers with you, then politely let them know how you feel and also that you know your legal working rights.

However, there should be some kind of contract regarding your employment with them and if there isn't then i would be asking them why not???

Also, check with the human resources department for the terms of their employment contract regarding pay.

All human resources departments should have one.

Thats the problem Butty.... as Batters says they just pay my Agency for my services.... on like a Consultancy basis. So the HR department have nothing much to do with me.

Batters - Yeah we get that staff/contractor divide here too. We get paid more, but a left out of alot of Office activities and have no paid leave.

I was hoping to hear their decision today, but have heard nowt! And I've got a meeting from 2.30pm until 5pm so I'm not likely to find out today. HMPH!

toothy no advice just very, very angry for you

butty · 09/01/2006 14:12

Could you maybe have a word with the consultant agency that arrange your work???

Sorry, i really dont know how it all works just trying to make suggestions as have been in similar situation but within an employed office, which sounds totally different!!!!

Hope you get it sorted in the very near future,

Butty.xxx

Toothache · 09/01/2006 14:19

Thanks RTL.

Thanks too Butty. I hate working in this Agency environment. But the drop in pay if I went onto their staff is incredible.... so I've just got to grin and bear it.

I have spoken to my Agency and they are relaying info between me and the bank.... just waiting to hear now.

Thanks for all the advice.

errr... I work in the construction industry (we build oil platforms) and the contractors make more than the staff... Works the same way in the states. At least for engineers. Is that not the norm? Why do you make less because you are contract. Seems to me you should make more to account for the lack of benefits and the increased job insecurity.

Can you go over to a competitor?

Easy · 09/01/2006 14:28

As a self-employed contractor it is a problem to include you in activites which may be paid for by the company, or to give gifts (as in Batters dh's case) which may be seen as 'employee benefits'.

An inland revenue inspection may deem that you are an employee, land the company with a bill for employer's National Insurance contributions, and you with a bill for P.A.Y.E. tax back payments.

This situation is one of the downsides of contracting. It basically means that you have to much more wary when accepting a contract in the first place.

Still feel for you tho' Toothache.

XmasPud · 09/01/2006 14:42

toothie that is outrageous, no wonder you are angry.
Agency work still ahs so many loopholes for employees. It is disgraceful. Hope your agency will fight your corner and some equality is reestablished. I guess backpay will be out of the quesiton?

Toothache · 09/01/2006 14:58

Uwila - There aren't any staff Planners here... but I have been told what the salary is if I took a staff job and its £10k less than I'm getting now! So I am getting paid more for being a Contractor..... sorry if my posts led you to believe otherwise. I know I'm still getting paid more than staff..... but its still £70 per day less than the blokes.

Uwila - I worked for a E&I Contractor for a few years..... in the Oil & Petrochemical Industry.... we could swap stories.

...back to my meeting.... how sad I am to come our to print something and check MN!!!
