Knock-on effect of industrial action in schools - Wed 30th

I'm a passenger escort taking special needs children to school. Employed by an agency since Sept as local govt have outsourced it to save money??

Talking to teenagers I've just found out that schools are shut on Wednesday. Neither council or agency have told me this. I realise I will have no students to take, so as I'm not working I won't be paid. Actually I'm not too happy with this, but what can I do?

Anyone else in this position? Anyone else been told if they're being paid?

Contact your agency tomorrow and see if they have other work you can do?

All local schools are shut - there will be no work

Agency dont hold the council contracts for day centres or other care work

Ah ok. I'd still speak to the agency to see what they propose...you're not striking and are available to work I presume

I usually do supply on a Wednesday but obviously cannot work as our schools will be closed and the schools are concerned about people covering strikers so I've always managed to change my days about. PITA but I' working Thursday instead.

i'd wait and contact the agency. my dc's school is still open, some staff are striking, but not enough to close it.

I'm a passenger escort. I can't take my students to school as it's shut - the website tells me.

Would have been nice if council passenger transport department or agency told me so. I found out by hearsay from a teenager.

Whatever happens I shall lose pay because all borough schools are shut.

why would you lose pay? Are you not contracted to work those days - if they decide to shut its not your problem, you still need to be paid, no?

A lot of parents will be losing a days pay but surely the bigger issue is impotant.

Were you previously employed by the council and then TUPE'd to the agency in September? If so your old employment contract still stands and if you are contracted to be available to work and you are available to work then unless there is a clause in your contract that expressly states you will not be paid for work due to indirect strike action then you should still be paid.

Why don't you call your boss first thing tomorrow and find out what's happening?

No Kate, I'm one of the new 'employees' since April when the service was given to agency.

Only get paid for hours I work I'm afraid. Same when both my students were ill on the same day.

Did you ever work for the council?

Are you expected to be available for work and then not be paid if for some reason (ie students ill/schools closed as you mentioned) the transport is not required? That does not sound right. Do you know if you are a casual worker or an employee?
