Hello. My salary is just under £20000 per year and dh is on a basic of £14500 plus any commission. He has only been there since September but has been called in to see the big boss tomorrow and so I am now feeling sick that something is wrong and he will be finished. If that does happen then I a going to advise that he works part time or evenings as he has not had much luck with jobs in the last few years and I am sick of the uncertainty. My job is muc more secure so after i have had this baby it would be better for me to come back full time.
Does anyone else live on a small wage like that? how do you cope?

Teddy - The national average individual salary is around £22k!! Going by the Student Loans Company.

But that figure is pushed way up by London salaries. In reality, around where I live £22k is a pretty good salary and not that average at all.
Agree with others Helsi... don't panic! It hasn't happened yet and I can assure you... you will manage.

My salary dropped from £21.5k to SMP (£100 per week) when I had dd. DH was only earning about £12k as a Trainee then. So for 5 months our monthly income dropped from £2100 to £1150. But we managed! And even if the worst happened and he lost his job..... I'm sure he'd find one in a couple of months.

his big boss was there this am when he turned up and asked him how he felt things were going. Dh said he was struggling with targets and the boss said oh don't worry I will speak to you this afternoon. He told him not to plan anything for the afternoon and to keep his desk as free as possible.
After lunch (of which dh didn't eat much) he went back to work and the 2 company directors were there too. The training manager turned up also. All these people had travelled from Birmingham. At 1.30 they called him into the meeting room and all the office were there.
They wanted to congratulate him on passing stage one of his consultancy training and for being top of the monetary league table in December. they were pleased with him and gave him a framed certifciate and a bottle of champagne.
He told the boss to next time give him some warning (jokingly of course) and did he realise what he had put me through. The boss laughed and said "I just wanted to surprise you!"

Thanks - I have just had an enormous tea as not been able to eat anything since my breakfast yesterday. Just had pile of pie and mushy peas and mash pots. Just couldn't face anything. Bump feels better for being fed now too!
