private tuition

I was a secondary school teacher before being a sahm. I am now thinking about work and realise that teaching would be too demanding with my family commitmments so i am thinking about private tuition from home which I hope would give me more flexibility.

Does any one have any experience of this? I have written a list of things to consider like what age group, cost, when, where, how to prepare ie syllabus, how to advertise etc.

Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

My DH is a private maths tutor which he has only been doing for a few years due to an injury which prevented him from doing his rather active existing job. He registered with a few agencys - he has a MA in maths and CRB etc - and they hooked him up with some students. He also advertised in the yellow pages and local newspapers etc so is trying to use the agencys less as they take a lot of commission. Once you are working though, word of mouth is the best way to get more students and DH gives them a £10 voucher if they recommend someone as a thankyou so it's an incentive to them to find him new students too Smile

The only downside is he works mostly between 4pm and 9pm as it fits in with the school finishing time which is the worst time for him as he rarely gets to see our 7yr old DD apart from a quick family meal between 5.15pm and 5.45pm Sad A level students are great as they can come during the day although he tries to go to them when DD is home as it's hard keeping her quiet for all that time and we have a small house so when he's in the lounge/diner we can only use the kitchen or upstairs. He has also spoken with a couple of the local grammer schools and they recommend him to their students who need an extra boost too so that's worth a try.

HTH and do ask more questions if you want to know any more Smile

Hi - I am doing a bit - i it will depend on the area and subject how much business you get - aUKtutors is one - have a look on that to see how many tutors in the area and what they are charging
I would try and get a current CRB - you can probably get one by voluntering at your local school eg your kids one

DH got his CRBs paid for by each agency he registered with. He's with 'Personal Tutors' and 'Wessex Home Tuition' if that is any help in the South of England.

the only thing I would say that some agencies take a bit per cent of your earnings -so if you can do it indepentantly I would, some just charge an introduction fee as do some of the websites which I think is better
