Disciplinary finding? What is it?

I have been asked to provide details of any disciplinary findings against me in previous jobs. What constitutes a disciplinary finding? I was once told off by line manager and I think I remember him saying with a cat's bum face that a note would be put in my file (v minor thing). Is this a disciplinary finding or is it something more serious?

I'd take this to mean results of disciplinary hearings, not a mild ticking off.

Oh fab thank you. I don't think my previous telling off was that bad but unless you know the details, the formal version makes me sound an absolute arse no one would want to employ. I was stupid and misjudged my working environment (think along the lines of a practical joke but not) but no harm ensued imo.

Not so interesting I'm afraid. It involved superimposing my face onto an email greetings card

I am quite ashamed of my younger self and it annoys me that it could still brought up.

Message to all young people in their first permanent jobs - nothing is ever funny when it is pulled out of a manila file by a stern 50 something tweed wearing civil servant.

A 'finding' implies a hearing, so I'd agree that it only covers formal disciplinary processes, not a manager giving you a ticking off.

Ah yes kenobi but when you email it to your team and some outside friends it could be circulating material which could cause religious offence and bringing the organisation you work for into disrepute or something. Was very definitely an issue but only ever me and my line manager, no invitation to bring union rep, I think note on file but NFA and definitely no hearing.

Thanks very much all, this is a huge relief, may be able to persuade an employer to take my offensive self on after all.

Warnings are not supposed to stay on file longer than 5 years, are they?

Warnings, in most places, stay on file for 12 months. There's no specific legal rule.

But that relates to taking the warning into account for subsequent offences. It's not quite the same as a new employer asking about disciplinary offences.

A new employer will ask as previous conduct is used as an indicator of future behaviour.
