I am currently 4 months into my maternity leave. I have statutory maternity leave as am not in position to take year off. My worry is a few things I have to speak to boss about flexible hours , working in central london even 3 days a week would not be cost effective with childcare. Should I have the dicussion and see what they can do and if not feasible look for a part-time job near home as travel cost wuld be cheaper. Or do I hand notice in only thing is have seen part-time jobs of interest but not looking to start till january.

It's always worth having a discussion about flexible working but you do need to submit a formal application. It's also not clear what you what in terms of flexible working. Do you want less days, shorter hours? Work out what is feasible for you and if you believe you can make a case for a workable job on that basis, ask them for it!

Statutory maternity leave is a year.

I think wait and see how you feel later ... Things might be different then?

Sorry I was confused ... Are you just taking six months of your statutory maternity leave? If so and you want to ask for a flexible working agreement you do need to ask now.

I'm still confused, although maybe that may be too much red wine or the effect of the X-factor! In your original post you say that even three days in London is too much so if you are looking for less days, do you mean 2? Be careful if you are commuting for less days as your travel costs will go up disproportionately if you have to buy daily tickets rather than a season ticket and even if you work shorter hours, those commuting costs remain the same whether you are working 4, 6 or 8 hours (unless you manage a very late start after the cheap fares kick in). If you have seen local jobs advertised that are of interest, you should apply! Current jobs will not be interviewing until mid November probably and if there are second interviews, offers would not be made until towards the end of the month. Then most employers will expect to have to wait a month for someone to work out their notice anyway so you are almost in January without even trying!

thank ann was initially looking at 3 day if had to in central london. but you are totally right the commuting costs do tally up. Local jobs is the way to go january is around the corner I looking at local jobs now hopefully I'll find something. jobs are out there just need to find one that matches my hors required and skills . glass of red wine nice
