Question for teachers who work part time

PickasillyChristmasName · 14/12/2005 15:54

I'm not a teacher, but was talking to my mum who is a teacher.

She was saying that any teachers in her school who have gone back to work part time after having had children have lost any responsibility points they had when they worked full time and that this is just accepted as "what happens".

Does this happen everywhere?

I think it depends on whether you can carry out the job when you are part time. For example, you can't be a head of year/department because you would need to be available in school every day. I have just returned to part time teaching and have always been a 'normal' teacher.
I think it's a peculiarity of the job.
There is a lot of restructuring going on at the moment and responsibility points seem to be harder to come by in the new system.
Maybe someone can put me right?

Depends on the circumstance, I went back as part time head of geog, it suited them because my department was over staffed and they got a very good deal because although I was only there 3 days a week and got paid 0.6 of the responsibility points I got to do 100% of the head of geog job!

i know its slightly different in scotland, but i know of part time principal teachers, and part time deputy heads (both primary school & both recently advertised).

I work part time and didn't lose my responsibility points( work in inner London)
I was working on average 2 days a week but doing the job as a full time teacher. I carried on for 2 years and then it was just too much work - I had so much work to do at home. When I went on mat leave for my second child I said I didn't want the responsibility when I returned, and what a difference it has made!
hope that helps

There's a big difference between part time and job share arrangements. Our LEA is an equal opportunities eimplyer so all vacancies are suitable ( in theory) for job share.

So the jury says it's possible but not always easy to hang on to those points!

popsycalindisguise · 14/12/2005 20:30

I work four days and have a responsibity point - I am a head of year

Chrismurfgirl · 16/12/2005 00:11

My mum worked 3 days a week (ft now) she got 2 responsibility posts whilst working pt

I actually gained responsibility points when I went back after DS.
I had been a full time class teacher but went back part time to teach drama. I started the 'Drama Department' there and was given the title 'Head of Drama' even though the only teacher in the Department was me. So I gained a responsibility point due to my title.
Departmental meetings were a bit boring I have to add

since you are all teacher! I wondered if anyone knows whether you still get to more up the main pay scale while on mat leave? I started mine in sept and have just got salaryt assessment sheet, I am still on point 3 and think I should have moved to point 4, anyone know?

hercules · 18/12/2005 16:44

No, I work partime and have a point. entitlement to a point in the new system is regardless of partime.

hercules · 18/12/2005 16:45

Yes, you do move up the pay scale. Very nice too!

homemama · 20/12/2005 13:32

As far as benefits, pay awards and promotion go, when you're on mat leave it should be as if you're not away IYKWIM.
You should keep the points as long as you can still do the job.

After having dd1 i requested to work 4 days and keep my head of year responsibility (4 points) and was turned down....I considered this to be discriminatory and consulted my union who were willing to put my case forward. I then got pg again so decided to have break and be main scale part-time. BUT I feel really annoyed that schools cannot be flexible or forward thinking on this matter, as far as I am concerned I wanted to carry on doing the same job as usual but spend an extra day at home. The senior management are regularly off-site on courses etc and the school doesn't grind to a halt!
